Hiking

The Flinders Ranges isn’t just South Australia’s largest mountain range — it’s a living storybook of Earth’s deep past. These rugged peaks and sweeping gorges were once part of a vast, shallow basin called the Adelaide Geosyncline. Over 650 to 500 million years ago, rivers, glaciers, storms and even meteorite impacts carried rock, silt, and sand into the basin, laying down the layers we now see exposed in the cliffs and chasms of the Ranges. Around 500 million years ago, powerful movements in the Earth’s crust compressed, folded and thrust these ancient sediments skyward, creating a dramatic mountain range far higher than what stands today. Over millions of years, the elements carved and sculpted this landscape, revealing the spectacular folded formations we now know and love, including the iconic Wilpena Pound. What remains is a breathtaking window into Earth’s history: fiery ridgelines, wave-like rock layers, deep gorges and weather-worn ranges that tell a story of oceans rising and falling, mountains built and eroded, and landscapes shaped by time, power and patience.
