“I did this trip in July 2025 as a reccy for WEA and honestly—it blew me away. The Arctic is wild, remote, and completely breathtaking. One day we were cruising past glaciers, the next we were out in zodiacs watching walruses on the ice and polar bears in the distance. We kayaked through silent fjords, hiked across tundra, and even collected sea ice for our happy hour drinks. The sun never set, the scenery never got old, and our little ship quickly felt like home. This isn’t just travel—it’s an experience that shifts something in you. We’re going back in 2026, and I can’t wait to share it with a group of adventurous women.”

- 03YES. Comprehensive travel insurance is compulsory for all Women Embrace Adventure travellers and must be purchased shortly after booking your place on this adventure.Personal travel insurance is not included in the tour price. This expedition includes trekking to an altitude of 5,895 metres on Mount Kilimanjaro, in a remote environment where medical facilities are limited and emergency evacuations can be extremely expensive. It is essential that your policy specifically covers high-altitude trekking to at least 6,000 metres, including emergency medical treatment and evacuation from remote mountainous regions.Your travel insurance policy must include:• Medical expenses, including accidents, injury, illness and death• Cover for any pre-existing medical conditions (where applicable)• Emergency evacuation and repatriation• High-altitude trekking up to at least 6,000 metres• Search and rescue expenses• Personal liability coverWe strongly recommend your policy also includes:• Trip cancellation and curtailment• Travel delays and missed connections• Lost, stolen or delayed luggage• Personal effects and equipment• Additional accommodation and transport costs due to unforeseen circumstancesPlease note that many standard travel insurance policies and some credit card travel insurance policies do not automatically cover trekking above 3,000–4,000 metres, and some exclude Mount Kilimanjaro altogether. It is your responsibility to carefully check the policy wording and ensure you have adequate cover for this specific adventure.Should an evacuation be required from high on the mountain, costs can run into many thousands of dollars. Inadequate insurance may leave you personally responsible for these expenses.Proof of valid travel insurance must be provided to Women Embrace Adventure prior to departure.
- 04This adventure is graded as challenging and requires a good level of fitness, determination and preparation. While no mountaineering or technical climbing experience is required, Mount Kilimanjaro is not an easy walk. The challenge comes not only from the distance covered each day, but also from the effects of altitude, consecutive days of hiking and the physical and mental demands of trekking to 5,895 metres. On most trekking days, you can expect to walk between 4 and 8 hours, often uphill and on uneven terrain. Summit day is significantly more demanding, involving a midnight start and up to 12–14 hours of trekking before reaching camp. The good news is that this is not a race. We follow the mountain’s golden rule of “pole pole” (slowly, slowly), allowing plenty of time for acclimatisation and helping maximise everyone’s chance of reaching the summit safely and successfully. To get the most out of this adventure, we strongly encourage participants to arrive well prepared. You should be comfortable:• Walking for 6–8 hours in a day• Walking on consecutive days without needing extended recovery• Climbing hills and stairs for extended periods• Carrying a day pack weighing approximately 5–7 kg• Training consistently for several months leading up to departureThe fitter and stronger you are, the more you are likely to enjoy the experience. Good preparation allows you to focus on the incredible scenery, friendships and achievement rather than simply getting through each day. This is also a team adventure. Every member of the group contributes to the overall experience, and arriving physically prepared helps ensure the group can move safely, efficiently and enjoyably together. We understand everyone comes from different fitness backgrounds, which is why we will provide training advice and preparation guidance in the lead-up to departure. However, it is important that participants take personal responsibility for their fitness and arrive ready for the challenge. If you are willing to train, commit to your preparation and embrace a positive attitude, Kilimanjaro is an achievable goal for many adventurous women. The summit is earned long before you arrive in Africa — it begins with the preparation you do at home.We are happy to discuss if you are unsure. Send us an email to hello@womenembraceadventure.com.au and we will set up a time to chat.
- 05Weather & ClimateOur adventure takes place during late August and early September, one of the best times of year to visit Tanzania. This period falls within Tanzania’s dry season, bringing generally clear skies, comfortable daytime temperatures and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. That said, this adventure takes us from the warm plains of Africa to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 metres, so we’ll experience a huge range of temperatures and weather conditions throughout the journey.Mount KilimanjaroDuring the trek, temperatures and weather conditions vary significantly depending on altitude and time of day.At the lower elevations, daytime temperatures are often between 20°C and 30°C, particularly in the rainforest and moorland zones. These lower sections are usually warm and comfortable for hiking, although occasional rain showers are possible. As we gain altitude, temperatures become progressively cooler. At camp, particularly from Barranco Camp onwards, overnight temperatures commonly drop below freezing.By the time we reach high camp at Kosovo Camp (4,750m), overnight temperatures can range from -5°C to -10°C, and summit night temperatures can be even colder.During the summit ascent, temperatures are commonly between -10°C and -20°C, particularly if there is wind. While these temperatures sound extreme, with the correct clothing, layering system and preparation, most trekkers are surprised by how manageable the conditions can be.The mountain can experience sunshine, cloud, wind, rain and freezing temperatures all within the same day, so being prepared for changing conditions is essential.Summit NightSummit night is typically the coldest and most challenging part of the trek.We depart shortly before midnight and climb through the darkness by headtorch. Temperatures are often well below freezing and wind chill can make it feel considerably colder. The good news is that once the sun rises, temperatures usually increase quickly and many trekkers find themselves shedding layers during the descent.Safari WeatherSeptember is widely regarded as one of the best times of year for safari in Tanzania. Vegetation is less dense, animals gather around permanent water sources and game viewing opportunities are exceptional. This is also when the famous Great Migration is often found in the Northern Serengeti near the Mara River, giving us an excellent chance of witnessing one of nature’s most spectacular wildlife events.Daytime temperatures during safari are typically between 20°C and 30°C, while mornings and evenings can be surprisingly cool, particularly in the Ngorongoro Crater region where elevations exceed 2,000 metres.Early morning game drives can feel chilly in open safari vehicles, so a warm jacket or fleece is highly recommended.Rain is possible but generally uncommon during this time of year. What This Means for YouFor this adventure you’ll need to be prepared for a surprisingly wide range of conditions.Over the course of 17 days you may experience:• Warm tropical temperatures above 30°C• Mild hiking conditions between 10°C and 20°C• Frosty mornings at high altitude• Overnight temperatures below freezing• Summit temperatures potentially as low as -20°C• Cool safari mornings and warm African afternoonsDon’t let this sound intimidating. We will provide a detailed packing list and gear recommendations to ensure you are properly equipped for all conditions. With the right clothing and layering system, late August and September offer some of the best trekking and safari conditions Tanzania has to offer.Kat’s Tip: Most women worry about being cold on summit night. In reality, being properly layered, well-fed and moving steadily makes a huge difference. We’ll provide a detailed packing guide and help you get your gear sorted long before we leave Australia. It might be cold, but you’ll be prepared!
- 06To ensure a supportive, personalised and enjoyable experience, this adventure is limited to a maximum of 15 Women Embrace Adventure participants.Joining you throughout the journey will be your Women Embrace Adventure host, who will be there every step of the way to help with logistics, provide support and ensure you have the best experience possible.During the Kilimanjaro trek, we’ll also be supported by an experienced local mountain team, including professional guides, cooks and porters. Our porters carry the majority of the equipment and supplies, allowing us to focus on enjoying the trek while supporting the local community and economy. On safari, we’ll be joined by knowledgeable local guides who know the parks intimately and are experts at finding wildlife and sharing insights into Tanzania’s incredible landscapes, culture and ecosystems. The combination of a small group, experienced local crew and WEA support creates a welcoming and well-supported adventure from the moment you arrive until it’s time to head home.
- 07Packing GuideKilimanjaro & Great Migration SafariOne of the unique things about this adventure is that we’ll experience everything from warm African plains to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 metres.During the trek, temperatures can range from over 30°C at lower elevations to as low as -20°C on summit night. Once we descend from the mountain and begin our safari, we can expect warm sunny days, cool mornings and comfortable evenings. The key to packing successfully for this adventure is layers, layers and more layers!Don’t worry—we’ll provide a detailed packing briefing and plenty of support before departure.Kilimanjaro Packing GuideLayers Are EverythingMount Kilimanjaro takes us through multiple climate zones, from warm rainforest and moorland through to alpine desert and the Arctic summit zone.Your main duffel bag will be carried by porters and will only be available when you arrive at camp each afternoon. This means it is extremely important that you carefully pack your day pack with everything you may need during the day.At a minimum, your day pack should always contain:• Waterproof jacket• Warm layer• Hat and gloves• Water• Snacks• Personal medications• Sunscreen and lip balm• Camera or phoneWeather on Kilimanjaro can change quickly and it is possible to experience sunshine, wind, rain and freezing temperatures all in the same day.The final summit ascent is completed overnight and in the early hours of the morning. This is when the coldest temperatures are experienced, and you should be prepared for temperatures as low as -20°C.Kilimanjaro Hot Tips• Wear your hiking boots well before departure to avoid blisters.• Test your boots are genuinely waterproof before travelling.• Layers are far more effective than one bulky jacket.• Polarised sunglasses are highly recommended.• Bring spare batteries and a power bank as batteries drain quickly in cold temperatures.• Nalgene-style water bottles are often more reliable than hydration bladders at altitude.• Wipes - There are no showers on Kilimanjaro. A small bowl of warm water is usually provided each day for washing.• Trekking poles are highly recommended, especially for the descent.• Dry bags are invaluable for keeping clothing and electronics dry.Headwear• Headlamp (300+ lumens) and spare batteries• Polarised sunglasses• Buff, neck warmer or scarf• Warm beanie• Sun hatUpper Body• 2 thermal base layers• 2 fleece or mid-layers• Insulated down jacket• Waterproof rain jacket• 3–4 hiking shirts (including at least one long-sleeve shirt)Lower Body• 2 thermal base layers• 2 hiking pants• Waterproof rain pants• Insulated outer pants for summit nightHands• Lightweight liner gloves• Warm waterproof gloves or mittensFootwear• Waterproof hiking boots• 4 pairs hiking / wool socks• Comfortable camp shoesBags• 60–90L duffel bag (supplied in Tanzania and carried by porters)• 30–40L day pack (carried by you)• Small lockable bag for items left at the hotelSleeping• Four-season sleeping bag (rated to at least -10°C) or hire in Tanzania• Sleeping bag liner (recommended)• Inflatable pillow (optional)Personal Items• Toiletries• Personal medications• Sunscreen• Lip balm• Hand sanitiser• Wet wipes• Small first aid kit• Blister treatment• Sanitary products• Travel towelRecommended Extras• Trekking poles• Portable charger• Camera• Earplugs• Diamox (discuss with your doctor)• Hand warmers• Dry bags• Gaiters• Downloaded music, podcasts and booksEquipment HireDon’t worry if you don’t own every item on the packing list.KiliTwende offers a range of quality mountain equipment for hire in Tanzania, making it easy to access specialised gear without having to purchase it yourself.Common items available for hire include:• Sleeping bags• Trekking poles• Day packs• Waterproof jackets• Gaiters• Down jackets• Sleeping bag linersEquipment availability and prices may change, but we’ll provide an up-to-date hire list closer to departure.Kat’s TipFor many women, hiring some of the specialised Kilimanjaro gear is actually easier and often cheaper than buying it and bringing from Australia.Items such as sleeping bags, down jackets and gaiters may only be used for a handful of days during the trek and can take up a lot of room in your luggage. Hiring these items locally can save both money and packing space. We’ll help you work out what is worth bringing from home and what is easiest to hire once we get closer to departure.Safari Packing GuideAfter Kilimanjaro, life gets considerably easier!September is one of the best times of year to visit Tanzania, with warm sunny days, cool mornings and excellent wildlife viewing. While daytime temperatures are generally pleasant, early morning game drives can be surprisingly cold, particularly in the Ngorongoro Crater where elevations exceed 2,000 metres.Comfortable, casual clothing is perfect for safari.Safari Packing Tips• September temperatures typically range between 10°C and 30°C.• Early morning game drives can be surprisingly chilly, so pack a warm jacket or fleece.• Neutral or darker-coloured clothing works well for safari and can often be worn multiple times between washes.• Plastic bags are prohibited in Tanzania. We recommend using packing cubes, dry bags or reusable zip pouches instead.• Save copies of important documents such as your passport, travel insurance, flight details and visa both online and in hard copy.• Most safari accommodation offers laundry services for a small fee, so there is no need to pack 17 days worth of clothing.Kilimanjaro Gear StorageOnce we finish the trek, any cold-weather gear you won’t need for safari can be securely stored before we head off to Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. This includes items such as sleeping bags, down jackets, thermal clothing and other mountain equipment, making your safari packing much simpler and lighter. We’ll provide more information about what can be left behind closer to departure, but rest assured we’ve got it covered.Clothing• 5–6 lightweight outfits (pants, dresses, skirts or long shorts)• 1–2 casual dinner outfits• 2–3 pairs lightweight hiking or travel pants• 4–5 lightweight shirts• Sleepwear• Underwear and socksWarm Clothing• 1–2 jumpers, fleeces or lightweight jackets• Lightweight thermal top and bottom (optional for those who feel the cold)• Lightweight rain jacketFootwear• Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers• Sandals or thongs• SocksSun Protection• Sun hat• Sunglasses• Sunscreen• Lip balmBags• Main suitcase or duffel bag• Small backpack or day pack• Packing cubes or dry bagsSpending Money• US dollars for drinks, souvenirs and tips• Credit card and/or debit cardTravel Documents• Passport (valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date)• Travel insurance details• Flight itinerary• Visa documentation (if required)• Copies of all important documents (printed and stored online)Day Bag Essentials• Reusable water bottle• Camera or phone• Portable charger• Binoculars (highly recommended)• Personal medications• Insect repellent• Hand sanitiser• Snacks for travel daysToiletries & Personal Items• Toiletries• Personal medications• Sanitary products• Small personal first aid kit• Contact lenses, glasses and solution (if required)• Travel adaptor• Microfibre towel• Swimmers (some accommodation may have pools)• Small umbrella (optional)Photography & Wildlife ViewingSeptember offers some of the best wildlife viewing in Tanzania, including the opportunity to witness the Great Migration in the Northern Serengeti. If photography is your thing, consider bringing:• Camera• Spare batteries• Spare memory cards• Zoom lens (if you have one)• Binoculars for wildlife viewingKat’s Packing TipMost women are surprised by how little safari gear they actually need. Most women carry a day pack weighing approximately 5–7 kg containing water, snacks, extra clothing, medications and personal items needed throughout the day. What happens if I get altitude sickness?Altitude affects everyone differently, regardless of age or fitness level. Our guides monitor all trekkers closely throughout the climb and conduct regular health checks. If a participant develops symptoms of altitude sickness, the guides will determine the safest course of action, which may include rest, medication, descending to a lower altitude or evacuation if necessary. The itinerary has been specifically designed to maximise acclimatisation and improve summit success rates. What is the summit success rate on this route? While no Kilimanjaro summit can ever be guaranteed, the 8-day Lemosho Route is widely regarded as one of the best routes on the mountain for acclimatisation and overall summit success. The extra days spent on the mountain allow your body more time to adapt to the altitude, significantly improving your chances of reaching the summit compared to shorter itineraries. Our goal is to give every woman the best possible opportunity to stand on the Roof of Africa through careful preparation, a gradual itinerary and the support of an experienced guide team. What if I don’t reach the summit? While reaching Uhuru Peak is our goal, there are no guarantees when it comes to high-altitude trekking.Altitude affects everyone differently, regardless of age or fitness level. Our guides will always prioritise your health and safety, and in some circumstances it may be necessary to descend before reaching the summit.Remember, climbing Kilimanjaro is an incredible achievement in itself. Whether you reach the summit or not, you’ll still experience one of the world’s great trekking adventures and create memories that will stay with you forever. What are the toilets like on Kilimanjaro? One of the questions we get asked most often!KiliTwende provides a private portable toilet for our group throughout the trek. While conditions are basic compared to a hotel, the mountain crew work incredibly hard to make the experience as comfortable as possible. Why have we chosen KiliTwende?Quite simply, because we’ve climbed Kilimanjaro with them before and loved the experience. On our previous Women Embrace Adventure Kilimanjaro trek, KiliTwende exceeded our expectations in every way. We’ve shared the mountain with them before, and we’re excited to return with another group of adventurous women to take on Kilimanjaro together.Safari & TravelWhat currency should I bring? The local currency in Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), however US dollars are widely accepted in many tourism-related businesses. We recommend bringing some US dollars in cash for souvenirs, drinks, tips and personal purchases. Can I use credit cards and ATMs?Credit cards are accepted in many hotels and larger businesses, however cash is still widely used throughout Tanzania.ATMs are available in larger towns and cities but may not be readily available during parts of the adventure. We recommend carrying a combination of cash and a credit card. Will I need to tip?Yes.Tipping is an important part of the tourism industry in Tanzania and is customary for mountain guides, porters, safari guides and hospitality staff.A detailed tipping guide will be provided prior to departure so you can budget accordingly. It is not necessary to tip your Women Embrace Adventure host.Is Tanzania safe?Yes.Tanzania is one of East Africa’s most popular tourism destinations and welcomes visitors from around the world each year.As with travel anywhere, common sense should always be used and guidance from your WEA host and local guides should be followed. What vaccinations do I need?Vaccination requirements and recommendations can vary depending on your country of residence and travel history. We strongly recommend booking an appointment with a travel doctor at least three months prior to departure to discuss vaccinations, medications and health precautions. Is malaria a concern?Malaria is not present on Mount Kilimanjaro itself due to the altitude, however it can occur in lower altitude areas of Tanzania, including some safari regions. We recommend discussing malaria prevention options with your travel doctor before departure. Is the food and water safe?During the trek, all drinking water is treated and prepared by our mountain crew.On safari and in hotels, bottled or filtered drinking water will be provided. As with travel anywhere, we recommend sensible hygiene practices including regular hand washing and carrying hand sanitiser.I have dietary requirements or food allergies.
