Frequently Asked Questions

1 - WHAT ISN’T INCLUDED?

In short – anything that’s not on the ‘What’s included?’ list on this site and in our tour guide! The main things you’ll absolutely need to get that aren’t included are:

  • International Airfare-You will need to book and pay for your own airfare. The WEA team will share their preferred Travel Agent and flight details if you choose to book through them. Although not necessary we do encourage the group to travel on the same flights or arrive into Port Moresby at the same time.

  • Travel insurance– Is Required.

  • Personal Porter– $620 (use of backpack included. *(THIS IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)

  • Spending Money - For drinks in Port Moresby and on the Track, souvenirs, extra snacks bought from the villagers.

  • Trekking Equipment - sleeping bags, sleeping mats, walking poles. Backpacks are supplied if you engage a personal porter.

2 – WHAT DO I NEED TO PACK?

The key for our trip is to not pack too much! We'll work closely with you to ensure you only bring what is required and what we have found to be the most suitable equipment for your trek. You will receive a comprehensive packing list available upon booking.

3 – DO I NEED A PERSONAL PORTER?

Our recommendation is you engage the services of a local porter to carry your backpack for you. They will look after you every step of the way and we are bringing much-needed employment to our local villagers. You will need to make the decision of engaging a porter before you embark on your journey as there is no help once we have left our starting point. (We will arrange this for you once you agree) If you carry your own pack, the weight will around the 14-15kg mark when you include your water and electrolyte fluid. If you can comfortably train with this weight you should be ok for the trek.

4 - DO I NEED A VISA?

Yes –You will need a Visa upon entry to Papua New Guinea and it is obtained free of charge when you land in Port Moresby. (Update 19/03/20 PNG has implemented an online visa program)

5 - HOW MUCH SPENDING MONEY WILL I NEED?

This largely depends on you. All accommodation, activities outlined on the itinerary, breakfasts, lunch and dinners are included. Additional food such as snacks and drinks are up to you as well as any souvenirs you may purchase along the track from the villages. We recommend exchanging about $A200-225 into the local Kina Currency (approx 450 Kinas) before leaving Australia.  You won’t need any more than that.

6 - DO I NEED VACCINATIONS?

This depends on your home country and your vaccination history. You should visit your Doctor or a local travel clinic and see what they recommend.

7 - WHEN DOES MY DEPOSIT HAVE TO BE PAID?

The non-refundable $600 deposit* needs to be paid upon booking. We are unable to secure your place until we have received this. Places are limited to 18 so we recommend you do this as soon as possible.  Once we have received your deposit, we'll send you a confirmation email. If you do not receive this within 48 hours, please check your junk/spam email folders and let us know if you cannot see it. Registrations for this trip will close on April 19th, 2020 (If not full beforehand) to ensure enough time for you to get fully prepared.

8 - IS PAPUA NEW GUINEA SAFE?

Like any country in the world, there will always be some dangers (even when in your home country!) and it is important to exercise common sense, particularly when in major cities and tourist destinations. However, you will be with our experienced team throughout your stay and will be travelling with a group. You will be accompanied on the entire journey by your experienced local and Australian guides. Your Kokoda Crossing guide, Travis Hocart has vast experience working within PNG and our route is that commonly taken by other Australian trekkers.

9 – WHAT IF I FALL SICK OR BECOME INJURED ON THE TRIP?

Kokoda Crossing is one of the few trekking companies to bring a dedicated trek doctor or paramedic on your journey. We have a fully equipped medical backpack including a defibrillator and an extensive range of medicines to treat a wide range of ailments. The advantage of having a trek doctor is we increase your chances of successful completion, we can care for our porter team and respond to any emergency situations in the villages we journey through.

You will require a medical clearance from your doctor 8 weeks prior to your trek. This form will be sent to you 4 months before our departure date.

10- HOW FIT DO I NEED TO BE TO TAKE ON KOKODA?

Although you have to be fit, you don’t have to be a super-athlete to complete the Track.

Given enough time, most people can train to an adequate level to successfully achieve this amazing journey.

Trekking on the Kokoda Track is a challenging experience both physically and emotionally. You'll find that you'll set new boundaries, gain a greater understanding of yourself and others through taking part in this 'once in a lifetime' experience. The terrain is rough in parts, and temperatures are high and humid year round.

Trekkers are advised that they need to be physically and mentally fit before taking off and our partners at Kokoda Crossing recommend that a full medical check by your doctor be undertaken prior to embarking on the trek or starting any training program.  A training regime spanning several months prior to departure is essential. We will provide you with essential information in relation to training and preparation needing to be done once you've made the commitment to trek Kokoda

Professional fitness preparation is the key to taking on the Kokoda Trail and you will need a high level of fitness to take on the challenge. Safety is if the highest importance to us take which means we cannot take clients who haven’t completed an adequate volume of training to safely complete the journey.

You'll enjoy the trip far more if you are not totally exhausted at the end of each day.

As part of your package, you will be sent a training plan and it is recommended you join WEA on at least 4 training hikes along some sections of the Great North Walk. These training days are included in the package price and dates will be sent to you well in advance and held from five months before we depart.

The WEA team will ring you monthly from booking and then every two weeks for the two months leading up to departure to ensure you are well prepared both mentally and physically to take on this amazing adventure.

Six weeks out from our trip WEA will host a weekend of hiking with our guide to check our equipment. We will also do two back to back hikes, one on Saturday and one on  Sunday to assess how everyone is progressing with their training. (these dates will be sent to you well in advance so you can work around family and other commitments).  Accommodation, camping and meals not included in the weekend but we will provide suggestions to help you get organised.
