Why Domestic Travel Insurance in Australia Matters More Than You Think

We suggest purchasing travel insurance for all our Women Embrace Adventure multi-day adventures to protect yourself, your belongings, and your finances, even for trips solely within Australia. But why?

It's a question we are often asked because, luckily for us, in Australia, our Medicare/private insurance covers most things if we become unwell or injured, but not everything.

Many travellers assume that travel insurance is only essential for overseas trips—but unexpected challenges don’t stop at international borders. Even within Australia, travel plans can go awry. Flights can be delayed or cancelled. Luggage can be lost or damaged. A family emergency could force you to cancel your holiday at the last minute. And what if you’re on your way home and your accommodation is flooded or your rental car is in an accident? Or lose your phone?

Domestic travel insurance is your safety net.

It can cover:

  1. Trip cancellations and interruptions due to illness, emergencies, or natural disasters.

  2. Lost or damaged luggage and personal items, even within Australia’s borders.

  3. Rental vehicle excess cover, saving you thousands if there’s a mishap on the road.

  4. Emergency accommodation or transport if you’re stranded due to bushfires, floods, or other disruptions.

  5. Medical evacuation or repatriation if you’re in a remote area and need urgent care not available locally.

Even with Medicare and private health insurance, domestic travel insurance fills the critical gaps—especially for non-refundable bookings and out-of-pocket losses.

What about the coverage your credit card provides? We suggest you investigate the coverage and claim limitations; in many cases, you aren't as protected as you think.

For a relatively small cost, Australian domestic travel insurance offers peace of mind, flexibility, and financial protection—so you can explore with confidence, knowing you’re covered if things don’t go as planned.

We aren't affiliated with any travel insurance providers to recommend companies to you, but we are happy to answer any questions you have.
