About The Adventure

Join us for very our own WEA private Whale Migration Encounter Tour.  The tour focuses closely on the annual Humpback Whale (Megaptera Novaeangliae). Humpback Whale numbers have been increasing at a rate of over 10% each year, with more than 35,000 individuals passing the coast in 2019. Adult Humpback Whales grow to 14–18 metres in length and can weigh up to 50 tonnes. While Humpback calves are born at 2 tonnes – now that’s a big baby!

Humpback Whales are some of the most inquisitive and interactive species out of all marine mammals making exceptionally long journeys from the Antarctic to the warm safe waters south of the equator each year. And to make it even better, June is prime Whale Watching time.

Highlights include:

  • Unobstructed 360° views from the boat

FAQs

Where Should I park?

Take a look at the getting here page on the Coast XP website, this explains the best ways to access the departure point, including the best options for parking, public transport, or even private transfers.

What happens if the weather is not suitable?

The Whale watching tour operates in a natural environment, which can be subject to change. If the weather is not good for boating the tour agency will let us know and we will cancel. If LIVE weather conditions are different to what is forecast when we arrive we may have to postpone or cancel the whale watching. If the tour is cancelled and not rescheduled we can offer you a full refund.

What should I wear on the tour?

You should dress for the conditions on the day. Make sure you wear enclosed shoes, and warm clothes. The crew will provide you with premium weatherproof jackets (should you need it), ensuring your tour is both enjoyable and comfortable.

Will I get seasick?

The level of seasickness or motion sickness someone feels differs from person to person. Our custom-built boat provides a fast, safe and smooth ride which often reduces a person’s level of seasickness. If you know you suffer from seasickness or are considering taking seasickness precautions/medication, it is recommended you speak to a healthcare professional.

What type of boat will we be going on?

The tour company operates a 10.8 metre, eco-tourism rigid inflatable boat (RIB), called ‘Atmos’. The vessel provides a fast, safe and smooth ride for up to 20 passengers.  Atmos is the only eco-tourism RIB to operate coastal sightseeing and whale watching tours along the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie coastline. Atmos is custom-built to the highest standards of safety and reliability, and even has a marine toilet on board!

I'll be coming on my own, is that ok?  Not a problem at all!  Lots of women come on their own to our adventures. Your Women Embrace Adventure host will make sure everyone is introduced before we set off.  We always have lots of fun, there is no pressure, no judgment, and lots of encouragement from everyone.  By the end of the day, you may have just found some new adventure friends!

How many will be on our tour?  We keep our adventures quite personal. On this adventure, there will be no more than 10 women your plus your WEA guides.

Are we guaranteed to see whales? There is an extremely high success rate of seeing humpback whales during peak season. While we don’t specifically guarantee you will see whales (as they are wild marine mammals), if whales are not spotted on a designated whale watch tour, the tour company offer a free return trip.

How close can you get to Whales?

Many of the whale watching tours have enjoyed close encounters with humpback whales. We will follow both state and national whale watching regulations meaning we are not able to approach a whale closer than 100 metres, or 300 metres if there is a calf present. Many of our tours have enjoyed humpback whales very close to the boat when they choose to swim to us!

Our whale watching practices have been designed in line with the Australian National Guidelines for Whale and Dolphin Watching 2017 and the Biodiversity Conservation Regulation 2017.
