Itinerary:

Day 1 – Monday 11th March: Meet at our Canberra Hotel Accommodation at 5 pm and head out for our Welcome Dinner (M-D)

Day 2 – Tuesday 12th March: Pallaibo Walking track, Approx 5.5km

After breakfast at the hotel, we'll board our minibus to travel to Cooma where we'll make a stop at the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre to learn about the history of the mighty Snowy Scheme. We'll enjoy a coffee and some morning tea before continuing our drive to Kosciuszko National Park. We'll stop beside the Thredbo River for some lunch and to snap a couple of pics before we head into the park for our first hike. Today's walk is an introduction to this terrific National Park and will take us through dry eucalypt forests before continuing past the scenic Sawpit Falls and Charlie's Cascades. We'll keep our eyes peeled for the interesting wildlife to spot along the way, and complete our walk crossing over the Thredbo River to our waiting minibus. Once we arrive at our accommodation there will be time to unpack, relax, and maybe have a spa or a sauna. We’ll have pre-dinner drinks and a yummy homemade meal before we make preparations and head to bed early to be ready for our sunrise walk. (M-B,L,D)

Day 3 – Wednesday 13th March: Main Range loop including Kosciuszko Summit, Approx 24km

You’ll be woken very early on this day to board the bus to drive to Charlotte Pass where we’ll start our walk up to the highest point in Australia. We’ll reach the summit of Mt Kosciuszko in time to watch the sunrise and toast the spectacular view with a warming hot drink and some breakfast. After we’ve taken in the incredible experience, we’ll continue across the Main Range, marvelling at the beauty of the alpine high country. We’ll take in the gloriousness of this glacier-carved landscape as we make our way around to the gorgeous Blue Lake lookout, then head downhill to cross the Snowy River before a final slog back up to Charlotte Pass. This is a very challenging day walk and you’ll need to be adequately prepared with a high level of fitness. The rewards for your hard work will be immense and this day will be the highlight of our amazing adventure. The afternoon will be yours to relax at the chalet or maybe a wander around Jindabyne followed by another delicious homemade dinner. (M-B,L,D)

Day 4 – Thursday 14th March: Dead Horse Gap, Thredbo River Walk Approx 18km

After a delicious breakfast, we’ll take a short drive to Thredbo village where we’ll spend the day exploring the beautiful bushwalks in the area. We’ll walk along the Thredbo Riverwalk, crossing the river several times, before making our way up the Dead Horse Gap track to the top of the Kosciuszko Chairlift. The Dead Horse Gap track is part of the Australian Alps walking track, a 655km long-distance walking trail through the alpine areas of Victoria, New South Wales and ACT. Don’t worry – we are just doing a few kms on the AAWT! As we climb steeply up, we’ll take in sweeping views of the Ramshead Range, Crackenback Mountain and the Thredbo Valley. Once we’ve completed this walk, we’ll travel back down to Thredbo village via chairlift to take in the views and then ride the Gondola up to walk along Merritts Nature track.  Pre-dinner nibbles and a delicious home cooked meal await our return to our accommodation. (M-B,L,D)

Day 5 – Friday 15th March: Guthega – Charlotte Pass Approx 9km

Today’s alpine outing starts at the charming ski village of Guthega. We’ll head out towards Illawong Hut and take a side trip to cross the Snowy River on the Illawong Bridge. Continuing on, we’ll cross Spencers Creek on Australia's highest suspension bridge and wind through stunning sub-alpine areas to finish at Charlotte Pass. One of our all time favourite walks!

We head back towards Crackenback after our stunning walk to lunch at Wild Brumby – a local distillery. Always keen to sample the local product, those who would like to can order a tasting flight of schnapps to go with their meal!

Our afternoon gives you a chance to rest your legs with a short wander around Lake Crackenback Resort trails (about 2km) and a spa or sauna back at our accommodation. (M-B,L,D)

Day 6 – Saturday 16th March Crackenback – Cooma – Canberra Bullocks Hut Wander 3kms

We’ll wake early on our final day for breakfast and to pack our things in the van ready for the trip home. After breakfast, we'll head out for a quick 3km wander to Bullocks Hut, one of the historic huts in Kosciuszko National Park.  We'll then start to make our way back to Canberra with a stop in Cooma for lunch at a local café then head to a local artist’s gallery to admire the talent and beauty of the Snowy Mountains. Our final few hours on the road will have you returned to Canberra in the late afternoon for your onward journey (or a few days more exploring if you so choose – at your own expense). (M-B,L)
