About The Adventure

We'd love you to join us for our Womens Health Week Fundraising Adventure help us give back to our charitable partners  'Jenny's Place' and 'The Soul Cafe Newcastle'.

At WEA we know good health is powerful!  Although we have had to reschedule this from September (Womens Health Week) to February due to Covid we want this event to be a reminder to set aside time for your health and wellbeing. Womens Health Week in September acts as a reminder to make an appointment for a health check, get active, and connect with family and friends. Good health starts with you.

To start, our 8km walk takes us from the Throsby Carpark on Honeysuckle Drive, along Newcastle Harbour Waterfront, past Nobby's Beach and out to amazing Nobby's Headland. After a scenic photo or ten we'll make our way back to Honeysuckle and board Sailing Schooner William the Fourth for our sunset cruise around Newcastle Harbour.

William the Fourth is an accurate operational replica of Australia’s first steam powered ocean-going paddlewheel ship.

Grab a glass of bubbles, some nibbles and sit back and enjoy the serenity, soak up the grand vistas of the Newcastle city panorama from the harbour. During our cruise you'll  have the pleasure of listening to our guest speaker, the amazing Liz Murray founder of Edge of Possiblites and Director at BNI Hunter Valley and Newcastle, who will speak to us about the importance of connection and nature on our mental health.

A little bit about Jennys Place ...

Jenny’s Place was the first refuge established in the Hunter and have been supporting women and children in our area for 43 years. The vision for the organisation started in 1977 by a group of strong and passionate women who believed that women and children experiencing domestic violence deserved to have a safe place where they could receive the support and assistance they required to live a life free from violence and abuse.

Their Domestic Violence Resource Centre is only one of its kind in Newcastle and it has been running for 12 years without proper funding. Jenny’s amazing team have managed to keep the place running all this time on small grants, donations, philanthropic money and the very generous community of Newcastle.

Kat and Sharon, founders of Women Embrace Adventure are pleased to partner with Jenny’s Place in 2020-2021. A portion of all proceeds from their adventures goes towards WEA New Life Baskets for women and children moving from a shelter to independent living.  Paying it forward…one adventure at a time.

A little bit about The Soul Cafe ...

Soul Cafe was established in August 2003 to serve hot meals free of charge to the highly disadvantaged of the Newcastle region. Today Soul Cafe provides hundreds of free sit down and take away meals each week.

Many of Soul Cafe’s guests are dealing with issues of homelessness, drug or alcohol addiction, crime or violence, poverty, separation, mental health or illness concerns and accommodation needs.

Soul Cafe’s desire is to do more than just serve a meal. The ultimate mission of Soul Cafe is to see vulnerable cafe guests placed on a path towards increased safety, health and purpose. They aim to lift a group of people that are less fortunate to a greater level of lifestyle within our community through a comprehensive approach that assists them to work through their individual issues and to re-engage back into society.

As such the meals provided are an avenue to link cafe guests with other necessary services including drug and alcohol and substance abuse programs, accommodation links, Centrelink referral, mental health counselling, refuge referral, haircuts, Legal Aid, Podiatry and a free doctor’s clinic.

We hope you can join us to celebrate Womens Health Week ( a little late but better late than never) and raise money for 2 amazing charities in our local community.

FAQs

How fit do I need to be? This walk is suitable for all fitness levels. All paths for this easy walk are paved and relatively flat with very few stairs.  Don’t worry we aren't in too much of a rush so just take your time, have a chat and enjoy the sights.

What do I need to bring? Warm comfortable walking/ active wear, sturdy walking shoes or joggers, extra layers as it may be chilly, personal medications, wet weather jacket (if it looks like rain), at least a litre of water.

I'll be coming on my own, is that ok?  Not a problem at all!  Lots of women come on their own to our adventures. Your Women Embrace Adventure host will make sure everyone meets before we set off on our walk. We always have lots of fun, there is no pressure, no judgment, and lots of encouragement from everyone.  By the end of the night you may have just found some new adventure friends!

How many will be this adventure.  We keep most of our adventures quite personal. But as this is a fundraising event we have opened it up to 40 lovely ladies.
