Come and learn all about the proposed Embrace Africa trips (August/September 2024) at our Information Evening (by attending, you are also contributing to helping women Living in Kenya's largest slum, with all proceeds going directly to Mirror of Hope (https://mirrorofhopecbo.org/)
Women Embrace Adventure (WEA) has partnered with Adventure Out Loud (AOL) to bring you amazing African Adventures in August / September 2024. Taking AOL's knowledge from 15 years of travelling, volunteering and living in East Africa, along with WEA's passion for supporting women and women's travel, we've created two exciting adventures to explore East Africa’s most exciting attractions...and we'll be making a difference in the world by supporting women living in Kenya's largest slum.
On the night, we're extremely lucky to have Nate Taiaroa, CEO – Adventure Out Loud and Tommy Nyawir, Founder of Mirror of Hope, joining us in person to take us through the trips in detail and answer any questions you may have.
A little bit about Nate and Tommy:
Nate Taiaroa is an Aussie with an enthusiastic addiction for life and an incredible thirst for adventure.
Nate first set foot in Africa in 2008 after the passing of his mum. Since his first trip, Nate has travelled, lived or volunteered in more than 40 countries across 4 different continents, many of which are in Africa.
From 2013 - 2015, Nate lived in Arusha, Tanzania and volunteered at the School of St Jude. He then founded Adventure Out Loud to combine his passion for travel and making a difference. Today, Nate guides most of AOL's Australian-led tours. He also runs the office and likes to spend most of his time inspiring people to explore Africa and fight poverty through education.
Tommy Nyawir, a Kenyan change agent, a husband and dad of two amazing kids, has lived and worked in Nairobi’s largest slums since January 1992. He has experience as a community development officer, a social worker, and as the founder of the Mirror of Hope, a community-based organisation fighting poverty through a range of innovative education and microfinance initiatives for disadvantaged women and children.
Tommy holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sustainable Human Development from Tangaza University College, A constituent college of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa. He is currently pursuing a Masters in Autism Studies.
Tommy has a great passion for making a difference in the lives of poor, marginalized children and women. He has a strong belief that every child deserves a right to education and good health.
Being a beneficiary of someone else’s generosity that saw him acquire secondary school education at a time when he had ruled out ever continuing with his education, he made a decision to see as many kids as possible access basic education, which he believes is the only way to eradicate poverty. This belief, coupled with the desire to give back to the community after being given so much by a stranger, led him to found Mirror of Hope. STAND ON THE ROOF OF AFRICA
Trip 1
Location: Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania
Do you have what it takes to tackle the Highest Free-Standing Mountain in the World?
Since 2015, AOL has helped 98% of their adventurers SAFELY summit Kilimanjaro, and they would love to help you do the same.
We will take 8 days along the Lemosho Route, encountering sheer cliff faces, giant towering glaciers and endless panoramic views; Kilimanjaro is a trekker's holy grail.
Reaching Kilimanjaro’s highest point is an extreme challenge. Battling multiple long days of trekking, freezing conditions and high altitudes, trekkers must leave their comfort zones and push themselves to the limit.
There may be blisters and tears, but as you stand on top of the “Roof of Africa”, watching the sun rise over Africa’s endless savannahs, you’ll feel a sense of “Freedom”, at one with yourself and with nature, and the euphoria of success.
With challenging treks, stunning scenery and 5 different ecosystems, it is no wonder Kilimanjaro has been voted “Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction” for the past 3 consecutive years.
WALK WITH THE MOUNTAIN GORILLAS
Trip 2
Location: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda
An ancient rain forest, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest extends over a series of steep ridges in the Virunga Volcanoes mountain range. Declared a UNESCO world heritage site due to its ecological uniqueness and natural beauty, roughly half of the world’s total gorilla population live in this park. Explore mist-covered mountains in search of the largest living primates in the heart of Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. An exceptional and humbling experience; observe the fascinating and intricate family interactions of the iconic mountain gorillas in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Seeing these animals up close in their natural habitat is one of the most impressive wildlife encounters in Africa, and probably the world. Visiting the gorillas directly supports conservation efforts and population growth. Take your chance to trek with one of the most unique animals on the planet. This really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
CULTURAL IMMERSION WITH THE LIFE-CHANGING MIRROR OF HOPE
Trip 2
Location: Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya
Explore the sights and sounds of Africa’s largest slum. Meet the life-changing Mirror of Hope, visit the home of one of the inspiring women MOH work with, meet her family and learn how to cook a delicious Kenyan feast. This is the perfect opportunity to immerse in Kenyan culture, practice your Swahili and get to know some of the most resilient and remarkable people on the planet.
The Mirror of Hope (MOH) was founded in 2010 by Tommy & Judy Nyawir to empower vulnerable women & children living in the Kibera Slums. MOH achieves its mission through the implementation of a range of innovative health, education and entrepreneurship initiatives.
If you decide to join us, we will do our bit to fundraise to support women living in Kenya's largest slum, the Kibera Slums. This money will go towards supporting the incredible work that the Mirror of Hope does to empower vulnerable women. As part of your adventure, you'll get to meet these women, hear their stories and learn from each other in an immersive and connecting experience like no other.
5 DAY MASAI MARA & LAKE NAKURU GREAT MIGRATION SAFARI
Trip 2
Location: Masia Mara National Reserve, Kenya
The Masai Mara is Africa's premier safari destination, while Lake Nakuru is one of the few safari parks in East Africa that gives you the chance to see multiple rhinos.
During this safari, you’ll be living inside the game reserves. This will give you the best chance to spot all of Africa’s exotic safari animals, including the Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino & buffalo). You may even hear these animals as you relax around an open fire, eat dinner under the stars or from the safety of your luxury safari tent.
Your trip will also contribute to keeping disadvantaged children in school...
Adventure Out Loud donates 50% of its profits to keep disadvantaged children in school. This means that by travelling with us, you are making a huge impact on the fight against poverty.
You can also personally sponsor a student for as little as $20/week, and we will take you to meet your student and their family as part of your adventure! This is a fantastic way for you to see, first-hand, the impact that you are making.
We could go on and on, but you'll hear ALL about our trips on the night from the experts. We hope you can join us!
xxKatrina and Sharon
